Plans Examiner

Position Overview:

The City of Torrance seeks a dedicated, results oriented individual to serve as its Plans Examiner. Under supervision, the Plans Examiner reviews, and approves construction plans for residential, commercial and industrial projects to insure compliance with State laws, building codes and local ordinances. This position also directly assists the public with plan checks for building permits and construction related issues.

Candidate Profile:

Minimum Requirements:
• Graduation from a college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Architecture or possession of an Engineer-In-Training Certificate from the State of California.
• One year professional experience in plan checking or residential, commercial and industrial projects for a municipality or county; or one year of professional experience in engineering or architecture involving structural design or soils engineering.
• Must obtain ICC Certification within one year of hire.

Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate has extensive building and safety knowledge, and a thorough understanding of effective code enforcement. Previous experience in the Public sector & excellent public contact skills are necessary. Must have exceptional oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

The following Registration & Certificates are desirable:
• Valid State registration as a Civil Engineer
• ICC Certification

Extensive building and safety knowledge and experience in the Public Sector. Must have excellent oral, written and interpersonal communications /Public contact skills, coupled with a thorough understanding of effective code enforcement.
