Sargent Town Planning – a design-oriented urban planning firm based in Downtown Los Angeles – seeks a full-time or part-time designer with strong urban and graphic design abilities. The successful candidate will support our team of senior urban designers and planners to produce plans and development codes for pedestrian-oriented neighborhoods, districts and corridors in a range of contexts for public and private clients. Our office is a highly collaborative, energetic, casual environment, shared with several other small firms in allied disciplines. Required Experience / Skills / Education:
We are looking for a strong designer– urban design and graphic design in particular – who is highly motivated and team-oriented, and who understands and is committed to applying the principles of human scale urban place-making to generate healthy, sustainable communities. A bachelor’s or master’s degree in architecture, urban planning or landscape architecture is preferred, and professional experience with an architecture or urban design firm is desirable but not required for a candidate with strong design ability. This position can be either entry level or intermediate level depending on the candidate’s qualifications and experience, and would likely begin as a 3-month full- or part-time contract position with the intention of transitioning to permanent employment.
Responsibilities would include urban design (e.g. existing conditions mapping and analysis, public realm and complete streets design, conceptual urban infill design, 3-D modeling, photosimulations), public outreach and website support, contributions to and production of vision plans, specific plans and form-based development codes, and potentially project management responsibilities. The ideal candidate will possess many of the following abilities:
Strong writing and communication skills
Expertise in Adobe Creative Suite applications, particularly InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator
Freehand drawing and illustration
Graphic design and web design
SketchUp, AutoCAD and GIS capabilities
