This position will report to the Deputy Director and be a supervisor and member of the Current Planning team. The position typically has three direct reports and is responsible for supervising most discretionary applications proposing development within the City. The ideal candidate will have the required experience to lead and perform expert level professional planning work that includes supporting and implementing the City’s General Plan, Zoning and Local Coastal Program. The Principal Planner provides competent and expert advice to elected and appointed City decision-makers, community organizations and the general public. Areas of responsibility include general urban planning and zoning, Coastal Act implementation, California Environmental Quality Act compliance, transportation, housing, economic development and contract management.

The selected candidate will have outstanding communication skills and be able to present expert advice to the decision-makers and community stakeholders. Lastly, the ideal candidate will be confident and adept at presenting messages appropriately regardless of the venue or audience.
