Planning Technician

Under general supervision, to perform professional staff work in the Planning Division, and to do other related work as required. Flexible schedule between 20 and 30 hours within City Hall hours of operation.
Examples of Duties:
Conducts research into current and advanced planning matters; develops, gathers and analyzes information; assists in the development and implementation of the General Plan and zoning code amendments; reviews, analyzes, and prepares reports on various planning and zoning code amendments; reviews, analyzes, and prepares reports on various planning and zoning applications; provides planning and zoning information to the public; may represent the Planning Division at conferences and public and private meetings; conducts field investigations and inspections relating to planning and zoning matters; performs other duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications:
Knowledge of:

Planning practices and concepts, purposes and structure of zoning ordinances, and the California Environmental Quality Act; research and analysis methods; computer word processing programs.

Ability to:

Communicate effectively orally and in writing; read and understand complex documents; understand Federal, State, County and City regulations; establish and maintain effective working relationships; collect and evaluate data; define alternatives and formulate recommendations.
Supplemental Information:
Education/Experience/License

Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in planning, geography or public administration and one year experience in a public or private planning agency

OR

Graduation form high school and two years experience in a public or private planning agency performing technical planning tasks

Possession of a valid California Driver License, Class C, required at time of hire.
Successful completion of background check and pre-hire physical is required.
