Planning Associate

The City of Torrance is seeking two dedicated, detail-oriented Planning Associates to join the Community Development Department. Under supervision, Planning Associates perform complex professional planning and housing tasks, interpret and explain zoning and housing regulations, and complete related work as required. Minimum Qualifications:
Education & Experience:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a major in city or regional planning, architecture, geography, landscape architecture, engineering, public administration, or a closely related field.

Two years of responsible professional urban planning experience which includes technical work in one of the following areas: General Plan Preparation and Maintenance, Design/Development Review Administration, CEQA Administration, or Redevelopment/Housing Administration.

A Master’s Degree in Planning may be substituted for one year of required experience.

License:
A valid California Class C Driver’s License is normally required.

Ideal Candidate:
In addition to the minimum qualifications, the ideal candidate will demonstrate:
• Strong oral and written communication skills;
• Ability to make presentations in a public setting;
• Extensive knowledge of City planning principles and practices;
• Excellent time management skills;
• Thorough knowledge of the techniques and processes involved in preparing long-term projects and redevelopment plans;
• High comfort level with technology; and
• Ability to work occasional weekends and nights.

A Bachelor’s Degree or higher is preferred. Historic preservation experience is highly preferred for one of the two positions.
