As the second largest city in the United States with over four million residents in an area covering 470 square miles, Los Angeles is known as the western capital of the U.S., the eastern capital of the Pacific Rim, and the northern capital of Latin America. Comprised of approximately 400 dedicated employees, the department strives to shape the future of the city and its diverse neighborhoods. The department is tackling many of the city’s greatest challenges such as homelessness, housing affordability, mobility, climate change and resiliency, economic vitality, and ensuring that new development is done in a sustainable and equitable manner. The department is also re-engineering its development process to be more efficient and responsive, and to enhance the unique feel of the city’s communities by balancing input from the neighborhoods with citywide efforts to address housing, economic vitality, and shared mobility. Central to the department’s mission is a strong commitment to diversity and equity.
There are countless exciting projects currently underway across the City, including a comprehensive General Plan update, the development of a new zoning code, the Los Angeles River Revitalization Master Plan, developing transit neighborhood plans around Metro Rail stations, planning for the Olympics, working with world-class architects and developers on landmark buildings that will change the Los Angeles skyline, and updating all 35 of the City’s community plans which will touch each neighborhood of the city.
The Deputy Director of Planning is responsible for the oversight of employees assigned to day-to-day planning activities as well as ensuring that critical programs are successfully executed. The department’s executive team has an Executive Officer and four deputy director positions reporting directly to the Director of Planning. Duties include organizing, supervising, reviewing, and coordinating long-range planning and current planning projects, budget and administration, as well as providing services and support to a variety of public and private entities, such as the City Council and Council Committees, the City Planning Commission, Cultural Heritage Commission, Area Planning Commissions, Certified Neighborhood Councils, and citizen advisory boards. The Deputy Director may also be called upon to act in the absence of the Director of Planning.
The City seeks a talented, energetic, and committed leader who will work collaboratively in a results-oriented organization to serve as the Deputy Director of Planning. Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in urban planning, urban studies, urban design, environmental studies, geography, architecture, landscape architecture, public administration, or closely related field; and five years of professional managerial experience in the planning department of a federal, state, or municipal government or equivalent public sector administration experience. Applicants must also have experience directing and managing through subordinate managers and supervisors. A broad working knowledge of California planning principles and practices, including CEQA experience, is desired and a master’s degree is preferred.
