The primary purpose of the position is to plan, organize, direct and coordinate major functions of the Department of Community Development and Sustainability, as assigned, such as Planning, Building Inspection, and Permit Services; and to provide highly complex staff assistance to the Assistant City Manager/ Director of Community Development and Sustainability. The primary area of functional responsibility for this position will be to oversee and manage the Planning Division of the department. The position assignment will oversee current planning staff: three planners, one planning technician as well as contract consultants. The position will also work closely with the Principal Planner who will oversee long range planning.
This is an executive level position providing high-level support to the Assistant City Manager/ Director of Community Development and Sustainability. This position is responsible for day-to-day supervision and special projects within the Department of Community Development and Sustainability as assigned. This position may act as Director in the absence of the Assistant City Manager/Director of Community Development and Sustainability. It is distinguished from the higher level of Assistant City Manager/ Director of Community Development and Sustainability in that this position is not a director, does not act in the City Manager’s absence, and only provides direct supervision over a division or department.

Experience and Training
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Six years of increasingly responsible experience in municipal development review work, including three years of supervisory experience preferably in a City or County agency or comparable setting. Equivalent to completion of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in urban planning, public administration or a related field. A Master’s degree and or AICP certification is highly desirable.
On a continuous basis, sit at a desk and in meetings for long periods of time; intermittently twist to reach equipment surrounding desk; occasionally stand, kneel, climb and bend; perform simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation; write or use a keyboard to communicate and occasionally lift or carry weight of 25 pounds or less. Incumbents will travel to and participate in various meetings, programs and events throughout the city, which may involve exposure to traffic and weather conditions.
